Quarto
Quarto is an open-source scientific and technical publishing system. Quarto is a successor to R Markdown that offers greater versatility and features, supporting a wider range of dynamic and static outputs. It is a powerful extension to using R (and other programming languages) to efficiently communicate our research, facilitating the production of attractive and transparent workflows and easing collaboration.

Quarto aids science communication by bringing the analytical code, results, and interpretation together into one place that can be efficiently updated, which is very handy for development (e.g., the code folding capabilities are really useful for meetings with collaborators and supervisors). The main Quarto website is the best place to get started. There is also a recording of an introductory session led by Dr Hugh Graham (ask Andy for access), and many more resources online with some key ones signposted below.
Key Resources
- Tutorial on getting started with Quato – A self-paced tutorial of about 2 hours aimed at early-career researchers. It covers the basics of the scientific and technical publishing system Quarto while using R in RStudio.
- Generating presentations with Quarto.
- A summary of the differences between R markdown and Quarto.
